Part 1: 11:00-1:00: Tasteful Tidings

Fruits, nuts, and spices have long played an important role in festive cuisine across the world. In the mid-1800s, citrus fruits, apples, walnuts, and cloves in particular became staples of the Victorian winter household; not just for their taste, but for their strong odors and ability to transform any drab, simple space. In this hands-on workshop, learn techniques for incorporating citrus fruits into wreaths, swags, or garlands, as well as other creative ways to make inexpensive decorations from fruits, nuts and spices. Each participant will have the opportunity to make a candle holder from an apple, create a “pomander ball” with oranges, cloves, and ribbon, and to make a “gilded walnut” ornament, complete with a secret message for a loved one.

Part 2: 1:30-3:30: Sensational Swags

If you love being greeted by the smell of evergreens in your home during the holidays, this workshop is for you! Practice techniques for cutting, shaping, and hanging spruce, hemlock, pine and fir branches into beautiful swags or table settings. After forming a swag, participants will learn to make bows and decorate their greenery with berries (real or artificial), dried fruits, pinecones, cinnamon sticks, or shells. Each participant will leave with 1 large swag, approximately 18″ by 30″.

*For participants taking both classes, there will be a 30-min lunch break at 1pm. Please bring a lunch.
