Archives Information

Hours

The Research Room is open noon to 4 pm Tuesday through Saturday, until 6 pm on Friday and by appointment.

Research

Our association, a county historical association, is a not-for-profit organization that researches, collects, preserves and interprets St Lawrence County History. Among our resources for genealogical research are a surname card index, family files, cemetery records, directories, county and town histories, old maps, a local genealogy database and reference books. Our town files can also be searched for information on subjects not related to genealogy, such as business and industry, education, religious institutions, etc. For further information please refer to this description of archives resources.

If you are unable to visit the Research Room yourself, and are interested in having us conduct some research for you, the following fees apply:

  • The first half hour of preliminary search of sources is free.
  • After the first half hour, research will be billed at $25 per hour. Most research requests can be completed in one to three hours. The first hour of research is to be paid for in advance. (Donor and Benefactor level members of the SLCHA receive two hours of free research annually.)
  • 25ยข per page for photocopies
  • $2.50 minimum for mailing

Please note that we are a privately run group and do not have access to records, such as vital statistics, probate, land and tax records. For research beyond our resources we may be able to refer you to a private researcher to do these tasks.

Because of the enormous volume of requests we receive and our limited number of researchers, some requests may take months to be answered. Please be patient and we will do our best to fulfill your research request as quickly as possible. Thank you for your patience.
